MrShy talks the show in and gives Ren a quick hello. quick bit of banter about the lack of guest this week.
Subjects for this week are; Pauper, the Pro Tour, Format Diversity.
Your Week in Magic
MrShy is playing standard again, he wrote an article about his deck for Magic Madhouse. He’s on Atarka Red.
Renfield received a very nice Secret Santa gift that makes a wonderful centerpiece for his cleric deck, now he has to not only optimize and refine that, but also it’s one he can never get rid of.
Little Bit of Lore.
speaking of Atarka Someone Recently Asked MaRo why you get “Elder Dragon Legends” but not “Elder Angel Legends” and this prompted some discussion among other folks on tumblr about why the lore has one but not the other.
It’s down to the lifecycles of both creature types. Angels are Created and for the most part unchanging, Dragons are hatched and get more powerful as they age. also it’s a nod back to the original elder dragons.
Also someone asked today if an Angel can achieve the spark. Maro’s answer was that as artificially created beings it was unlikely that they would. however Karn was also an artificially created being, and he achieved planeswalker status, so it is possible.
Ren and Shy are both quite curious about Pauper at the moment, there’s been some cool decks popping up recently and the format genuinely seems to be fairly diverse, from what we’ve seen on MTGO.
Mr Shy particularly likes the Mono Black Control lists with Chittering Rats and Gray Merchant of Asphodel.
Ren likes heavy evasion aggro, notably Slippery Bogle and Rancor.
Although it seems that in the last MTGO Pauper event Mono Blue Aggro came first.
The top 8 consisted of 3 aggro, 3 delver and 2 affinity decks. -How is Delver not banned?!?
Ren challenged Shy to brew a Pauper deck!
Shy has actually played in a Paper Pauper tournament once, because that was a thing one time, so he decided to develop the deck he played at that. Originally he was using Freed from the Real to create an infinite mana combo with Axebane Guardian and Defenders, which then ended with an X spell that he can’t remember the name of. He has since realised that by playing actual burn, as well as the semi-uncounterable Kaervek’s Torch you can achieve more consistent wins with a less clunky combo. Here’s the list:
Note, no real sideboard yet, but he does like the plan of having big Eldrazi to beat up on the decks that don’t play many creatures.
So Eldrazi? This round of bannings actually made Ren have a brief look at what’s going on in Modern, especially as he seems to have some cards that were considered jank that seem to now be used.
The Pro Tour was dominated by the UR Eldrazi list from East West Bowl and the Colourless Eldrazi list that a whopping 17 out of 20 players on the CFB/F2F team played. Affinity also appeared in strong representation, with literally every other deck being in significantly smaller numbers, especially at the top tables.
LSV Made a deep run and hit top-8, which was great to see for MrShy, because he is a huge fan. Paul Cheon put up a great showing, finishing 12-4 – his best PT finish to date. Frank LePore also put up a strong result in his first ever ProTour.
Top 8 from atlanta 2 affinity and 6 Eldrazi, has the recent ban list skewed the format? SEGUE!
Modern Format Diversity (and other formats)
With Eldrazi and Affinity lists dominating the Pro Tour and GR Tron still seeing a lot of play outside of premier events, has the format been harmed by the recent B&R update?
Shy thinks that at lower level tournaments we will still see a broad spectrum of strategies represented. It’s unlikely that people will all jump onto the Eldrazi deck and Affinity has been a constant presence anyway, with a strong camp of people who refuse to play it on grounds of not enjoying how linear they feel it is.
Ren thinks he’s spotted a common weakness in the PT top 8 decks which also applies to Tron and that is the manabase. Ren has been brewing a casual modern LD deck for a while now, which we’ve mentioned before and with a bit of development he wonders if it could be an actual, viable list to counter the PT decks.
Fulminator Mage and Blood Moon have both been on the rise recently, due to increasingly greedy mana bases, man lands and the ever present threat of Inkmoth and Blinkmoth Nexus, as well as the Tron Lands. Painter’s Servant is also showing a steady upward trend in price. possibly setting up for a new foil for certain colourless decks. Cavern of Souls is also going up.
The follow up set to Shadows over Innistrad has been announced, it will be called Eldritch Moon. Definitely riffing on the HP lovecraft vibe.
Also, it’s with great sadness and regret that we announce the fantastically talented artist Wayne England has passed away. Wayne was a long time artist for Magic and many other games and both him and his unique style will be sorely missed.
