Do you think you have an advantage since you are a girl? Do your opponents treat you differently? Do you use your femineness to your advantage?
Some male players believe that females do have an advantage just because they are girls. I’ve heard stories of when a male played a female he came back to his friends and said, “I don’t know what happened. All I saw were boobs and I lost.” To me this is a very rare case. What I have come across playing against males is they believe opponents are opponents. I have tried to use my femineness by wearing low cut shirts and leaning over the table but guess what…You don’t even look at your opponent when you are playing. Each time I’ve watched games the majority of the players focus on the cards in their hands, the cards on the battlefield and their eyes go only as high enough as their opponents hand to see how many cards are in their hand. No eye contact. So for me wearing a low cut shirt doesn’t mean a thing. My opponents that do table talk and look at me during play are the ones that have become very proficient at the game and could care less that I am female. They want to win, they know how so they will win at any cost.
There are some advantages to being a girl. My opponents underestimate me. “She’s a girl. She doesn’t know how to play. You can keep sketchy hands against her.” And to this I say thank you because that is how I got my PTQ top 8 because my opponents would keep sub-par hands against me. However, since I am underestimated to begin with I play into that by asking a lot of questions. “Wait, I need to read that card.” “What set is that land from?” “Those are cool sleeves. Where did you get them?” “Where did you get this dice from?” Questions that would seem odd for a male to ask to another male. My opponents just think that I’m asking because I am a girl and don’t know how to play magic. And of course I ask these questions at the least convenient times for my opponents to throw them off their thinking process. Also, during sideboarding I start small talk about where they are from, other hobbies, how long they’ve been playing to try and distract them as well.
There are advantages to being a female but that is only because males underestimate females. If every player were to be treated as an equal then there would be no outside advantages other than each players skill. But until that happens I’ll enjoy getting to know my opponent(I also ask the questions because I am genuinely interested about learning more about my opponent but I can still ask at times that aren’t so convenient for them) and playing the game well.
Hope that clears some questions up
